Microsoft released Service Pack 2 of Windows 2000.

May 17 Nintendo unveiled new upcoming Mario games at E3 2001, such as Mario Kart Advance, Luigi's Mansion, and Wario Land 4.
May 18 Shrek Shrek soundtrack

Shrek was released in theaters, along with its soundtrack on CD.

The next two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "Mission Spinarak" and "Snow Rescue", were released on VHS and DVD.

June 6 HIT Entertainment bought Lyrick Studios. This resulted in all Barney Home Videos from the 1990s to gradually go out of print, and a redesign of the official Barney website.
June 8 Kiki's Delivery Service 2001 DVD (Japan)

Kiki's Delivery Service was released on Region 2 DVD in Japan. This DVD included a trailer for Spirited Away.

June 9 The first official trailer for Monsters, Inc. was released online.
June 11 Sma title

Super Mario Advance was released for the Game Boy Advance in North America.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire premiered in theaters.

June 18 Sonic Adventure 2-title

Sonic Adventure 2 was released for the Sega Dreamcast. This was one of the last games for the console, before Sega was downgraded to a video game developer, the same rank as the Kirby series' HAL Laboratory.

June 19 Shrek grossed $200 million so far in the box office.
June 22 The first trailer for Ice Age was released online.
June 27 Another trailer for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released online.

Spirited Away premiered in Japanese theaters, three days after its soundtrack was released on CD. The film remained playing in theaters in Japan for the rest of 2001, with comic book adaptations arriving in bookstores along the way.

August 1 A new Special Edition of Beauty and the Beast was announced for a release in IMAX theaters on January 1, 2002.
August 18 Pokemon Season 4

New episodes of the Johto League Champions season of Pokémon premiered on Kids' WB.

August 24 Internet Explorer logo 6

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 98 and 2000 users.

Nintendo unveiled "Mario Sunshine" at Space World 2001.
August 27–31 Mksc title

On the first day of this week, Mario Kart: Super Circuit was released for the Game Boy Advance.

The "Celebrating the Arts" episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (#1761–1765) premiered on PBS Kids.

Reruns of all 300 episodes began the next week, in which the episodes were now completely shuffled.

By week's end, all PBS stations were forced to cease broadcasting of The Kidsongs TV Show, which itself remained unseen from then on for over a decade.

September 9 Full House returned to syndication while also still airing on TBS.

September 24 Season 6 of Arthur premiered on PBS Kids. It ran for 10 episodes through November 26.

My Neighbor Totoro was released on Region 2 DVD in Japan.

October 6 Hnklogo2 Kirby soundtrack2001 Kirby soundtrack

A new Kirby anime premiered on CBC TV in Japan to begin the second generation of the Kirby franchise. Kirby soundtrack albums were released on CD shortly afterwards.

October 9 Snowwhite 2001

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released on DVD as a Platinum Edition. Also announced to be Platinum Edition titles in the future included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Bambi, in which their previous video releases were still available in most Blockbuster rental stores.

October 23 Dumbo 2001

Dumbo was re-released on DVD as a 60th Anniversary Edition. This was also the first DVD for North American viewers.

At the same time, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was now set for a DVD release in early 2002.

October 25 Winxppro

Microsoft released Windows XP, succeeding both Windows 2000 and Me. It was originally available in Home and Professional editions.

November 2 Shrek dvd

Shrek was released on DVD and VHS. It later ended its theatrical run with a box office total of $267,665,011.

Monstersinc Monstersinc ost Monstersinc novelization

Monsters, Inc. premiered in theaters, more than a week after its soundtrack was released on CD, and a month after the books were released in bookstores.

November 5 A new trailer for Ice Age was released online.
November 6 Walt Disney Home Entertainment announced a DVD release of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh for its 25th anniversary.

Fox Family was rebranded as ABC Family.

November 18 Nintendo GameCube logo Luigi

Luigi's Mansion was released for the Nintendo GameCube in North America.

Wario Land 4 was released for the Game Boy Advance.
