January 15	Wikipedia launched online.
	Nintendo announced a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 titled "Mario Advance".
January 23	Pokémon: Round One! and Friends & Rivals were released on VHS and DVD, along with the Totally Pokémon soundtrack on CD.
January 30	Dinosaur was released on VHS and DVD.
February 5	Paper Mario was released for Nintendo 64.
February 13	Thomas' Trackside Tunes was released on VHS. This tape contained the last unreleased Season 5 episode, thus completing the first five seasons to date.
February 27	Disney's Greatest Vol. 1 and Disney's Greatest Vol. 2 were released in music stores.
March 1	How the Grinch Stole Christmas ended its theatrical run with a box office total of $260,044,825.
March 6	The first trailer for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released online.
March 13	The English dub of Princess Mononoke was released on VHS.
March 17	Nintendo announced a Super Mario World remake as the second "Mario Advance" game.
March 20	The Sword in the Stone was released on DVD as the last Gold Collection title.
March 21	Super Mario Advance was released in Japan. This game was a remake of Super Mario Bros. 2.
March 27	The first two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "A Brand New World" and "Midnight Guardian", were released on VHS and DVD. Aladdin's soundtrack was also re-released on CD.
April 3	The Amanda Show's second season ended with 17 episodes, for a total of 30 for the entire series to date.
April 9	Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble was released for Game Boy Color. This was the last game for the Kirby franchise's first generation.
May 1	The Emperor's New Groove was released on VHS and DVD.
May 7	Mario Party 3 was released for Nintendo 64. Shortly after this game was released, Nintendo redesigned their official website to promote the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube.
May 16	Microsoft released Service Pack 2 of Windows 2000.
May 17	Nintendo unveiled new upcoming Mario games at E3 2001, such as Mario Kart Advance, Luigi's Mansion, and Wario Land 4.
May 18	Shrek was released in theaters, along with its soundtrack on CD.
May 29	The next two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "Mission Spinarak" and "Snow Rescue", were released on VHS and DVD.
June 6	HIT Entertainment bought Lyrick Studios. This resulted in all Barney Home Videos from the 1990s to gradually go out of print, and a redesign of the official Barney website.
June 8	Kiki's Delivery Service was released on Region 2 DVD in Japan. This DVD included a trailer for Spirited Away.
June 9	The first official trailer for Monsters, Inc. was released online.
June 11	Super Mario Advance was released for the Game Boy Advance in North America.
June 15	Atlantis: The Lost Empire premiered in theaters.
June 18	Sonic Adventure 2 was released for the Sega Dreamcast. This was one of the last games for the console, before Sega was downgraded to a video game developer, the same rank as the Kirby series' HAL Laboratory.
June 19	Shrek grossed $200 million so far in the box office.
June 22	The first trailer for Ice Age was released online.
June 27	Another trailer for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released online.
July 20	Spirited Away premiered in Japanese theaters, three days after its soundtrack was released on CD. The film remained playing in theaters in Japan for the rest of 2001, with comic book adaptations arriving in bookstores along the way.
July 21	Mario Kart: Super Circuit was released in Japan as "Mario Kart Advance". This game also contained the Super Mario Kart courses as "Extra Tracks".
July 29	Pokémon Crystal was released for Game Boy Color.
July 31	The next two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "Flying Ace" and "Fire Power", were released on VHS and DVD.
August 1	A new Special Edition of Beauty and the Beast was announced for a release in IMAX theaters on January 1, 2002.
August 18	New episodes of the Johto League Champions season of Pokémon premiered on Kids' WB.
August 24	Microsoft released Internet Explorer 6 for Windows 98 and 2000 users.
	Nintendo unveiled "Mario Sunshine" at Space World 2001.
August 27–31	On the first day of this week, Mario Kart: Super Circuit was released for the Game Boy Advance.
	The "Celebrating the Arts" episodes of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (#1761–1765) premiered on PBS Kids. Reruns of all 300 episodes began the next week, in which the episodes were now completely shuffled.
	By week's end, all PBS stations were forced to cease broadcasting of The Kidsongs TV Show, which itself remained unseen from then on for over a decade.
September 3	The 18th season of Jeopardy! and the 19th season of Wheel of Fortune began on local syndication.
September 9	Full House returned to syndication while also still airing on TBS.
September 14	Luigi's Mansion was released for Nintendo GameCube in Japan.
September 24	Season 6 of Arthur premiered on PBS Kids. It ran for 10 episodes through November 26.
September 25	The next two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "Team Green!" and "Crimson Warrior", were released on VHS and DVD.
September 28	My Neighbor Totoro was released on Region 2 DVD in Japan.
October 6	A new Kirby anime premiered on CBC TV in Japan to begin the second generation of the Kirby franchise. Kirby soundtrack albums were released on CD shortly afterwards.
October 9	Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was released on DVD as a Platinum Edition. Also announced to be Platinum Edition titles in the future included Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Bambi, in which their previous video releases were still available in most Blockbuster rental stores.
October 23	Dumbo was re-released on DVD as a 60th Anniversary Edition. This was also the first DVD for North American viewers. At the same time, The Hunchback of Notre Dame was now set for a DVD release in early 2002.
October 25	Microsoft released Windows XP, succeeding both Windows 2000 and Me. It was originally available in Home and Professional editions.
November 2	Shrek was released on DVD and VHS. It later ended its theatrical run with a box office total of $267,665,011.
	Monsters, Inc. premiered in theaters, more than a week after its soundtrack was released on CD, and a month after the books were released in bookstores.
November 5	A new trailer for Ice Age was released online.
November 6	Walt Disney Home Entertainment announced a DVD release of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh for its 25th anniversary.
November 10	Fox Family was rebranded as ABC Family.
November 16	Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was released in theaters, two weeks after its soundtrack on CD.
November 18	Luigi's Mansion was released for the Nintendo GameCube in North America. This resulted in all Nintendo 64 games to gradually phase out in retail stores.
November 19	Wario Land 4 was released for the Game Boy Advance.
November 20	How the Grinch Stole Christmas was released on DVD and VHS.
	The Cat in the Hat, The Lorax, Dr. Seuss on the Loose, The Hoober-Bloob Highway, The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat, Pontoffel Pock and His Magic Piano, and Grinch Night were all re-released on VHS by Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
	Peter Pan was set for a DVD re-release for its near 50th anniversary in early 2002.
November 21	Princess Mononoke was released on DVD in Japan. This DVD contained a lot more bonus material than the Region 1 version.
November 26	The current dollar values for Jeopardy! gameplay began use on this date.
November 27	The next two volumes of Pokémon: The Johto Journeys, titled "Azalea Adventures" and "Buggy Boogie", were released on VHS and DVD.
December 1	Sonic Christmas Blast aired on Toon Disney for the last time.
December 3	Super Smash Bros. Melee was released for the Nintendo GameCube.
December 14	Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 was released in Japan.
December 18	The Special Edition soundtrack for Beauty and the Beast was released on CD.
December 20	Sonic Advance was released in Japan. This marked the first time the Sonic characters appeared in a Nintendo video game.
December 27	Pre-orders for Region 1 DVDs of My Neighbor Totoro and Castle in the Sky began.
December 30	Season 6 of All That aired for the last time on Nickelodeon.
December 31	By year's end, Monsters, Inc. grossed $237,466,244 so far in the box office, while Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone grossed $288,516,174.
	Support for Windows 95 and older operating systems ended. This resulted in newer CD and DVD-ROM titles requiring at least Windows 98.
