HBO, abbreivated Home Box Office, launched in 1975 as the first premium pay television network in the United States. Programming mostly consists of motion pictures about one year after theatrical release, as well as made-for-cable films and documentaries.

Secondary networks[]

In 1991, two secondary channels launched alongside HBO -- HBO2 and HBO3. Another channel, HBO Family, launched in December 1996, and only plays movies and programs rated no higher than PG-13 or TV-14. In October 1998, HBO3 was renamed HBO Signature.

The high definition counterpart (HBO HD) launched on March 6, 1999, in the 1080i resolution format. All the other channels' high definition counterparts were launched in the 2000s or later.
