In 1990 for the first time, all three Star Wars films were released in a complete trilogy boxset on VHS.

The last pre-Special Edition release of the Star Wars trilogy was released on VHS on August 29, 1995. It contained THX's digitally remastered audio and video quality on all three Star Wars films. In its first week, a total of 8.5 million copies of the 1995 VHS were sold. A documentary film called "From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga" was also available on VHS at that time.

Japan

The Japanese imports of these videos were released on November 21, 1990, in English with Japanese subtitles, followed by a re-relase on October 21, 1995. Oddly enough, the 1995 VHS of all three films also carry the same closed captions from the original U.S. import, often displaying over the Japanese subtitles (that is, if you buy the subtitled version).
