Playhouse Video, a division of CBS/FOX Video, was the main distributor for The Cat in the Hat and all other Dr. Seuss specials on VHS. When originally released in 1985 on VHS, The Cat in the Hat also included Dr. Seuss on the Loose. It was later re-printed alone in 1989.

After Playhouse Video became defunct, distribution rights for The Cat in the Hat and three other Dr. Seuss videos were sold to Fox Video, which was established in 1991. Later in 1994, a "sing-along" version was released, followed by a re-print in 1997 with previews of other Fox Kids Video titles.

Finally, late in 1998, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's last re-release of The Cat in the Hat on VHS (without the sing-along lyrics) also included The Hoober-Bloob Highway.
